Just over a year ago, I had my eyes tested. The prescription was made up, with a tint on my distance lenses, all was fine, and away I went.
About 6 months ago, I started noticing that the sight in my right eye was altering. This was my good eye. The distance prescription was negligible and the reading wasn't much more, but now I was having difficulty at all ranges. It appeared that my right eye was now worse than my left...
As I'm on a fixed income, I qualify for help with healthcare costs. This means I can have a free eye exam... every 2 years. Bizarrely, I can have as much dental treatment - including gold crowns - and as much medical treatment as I can lay my hands on. But if my eyesight changes during this time, the optician has to decide if I have to pay... which can only be decided after an examination!
As it happens, when I described the change to the receptionist, She had a quick word and the thought was that there was enough change to warrant a free exam. So, 2 weeks ago, I duly attend my exam.
There was a change in my right eye, as suspected. It has become worse than the left. A prescription was written, based on the perfect set up arranged in the exam. I had to wait a day for frames in my size to arrive, so I could decide how daft I wanted to look.
The frames arrived, a choice was made and a tint for my distance lenses was chosen.
Yesterday, I went to collect my new specs. When I tried them on, I was expecting the miraculous change that happened during the exam. Oh, no... they were so bad, I turned them upside down, in case they'd swapped the lenses, but it was just as bad.
The reading glasses were actually ok, for the left eye, but useless for the right, with the net result being my right eye feels odd and the letters are still blurred, a touch. OK, the readers aren't right. The distance were worse still. I could read signs across the office, without them, but they were a complete mess with them. I said so. The dispenser went to check them on the equipment. they were spot on, per the prescription. I agreed to take them and try them for a few days.
I popped the distance pair on, the tint reduced the light to a comfortable level, and I set off to give them a whirl. Everything beyond about 12 feet was blurred and wasn't much better, closer to. I made it home without crashing and tried to read the paper... Ha! No chance!
They're going back.
If the re-exam (hopefully with a different optician in the practice) doesn't improve things, I'm going to have to ask the optician to write it up, so I can take it to my quack and get an urgent appointment with an eye specialist. I can't continue like this - I have to study, the nights are closing in and I need to drive. I need to know WTF is going on!

Money from misery
There's a cats and dogs home near me, which I dislike intensely.
Why do I feel like this? The answer is simple, the shelter is run as a business - a commercial operation designed to make profit from the misery of abandoned animals.
The owner of this place is a nasty piece of work. A few years ago she was in the news for basically being an execution point for racing greyhounds, who had passed their prime. Given she was running an animal sanctuary, supposedly caring for abandoned animals, how did she justify this? She said she was providing a service for owners and it was more humane than their usual methods. She also mentioned that the fees for greyhound executions, helped keep the cashflow through the sanctuary. She was utterly unrepentant, but stopped being an executioner.
She was also unrepentant, recently when she told an adopter that the cat he adopted was a neutered male and had all it's jabs, etc. 3 weeks later, the cat's owner found he had a pregnant female! He noticed the "male" had a swollen stomach, so had "him" checked at the vet's. The vet informed him of the true circumstances and suggested that the cat may have had it's jabs, but had obviously not been properly examined. The owner complained to the home and, yet again the owner of the home was unrepentant. The cat's owner sued her for costs associated with caring for and re-homing 10 kittens, which he neither wanted nor expected.
My dogs have all come from there, in the past, but I'm not inclined to go there any more, since the facts emerged. This does however, leave me feeling like I'm rejecting the dogs at that home, simply because they're there and because the owner of the home is a heartless, conniving cow.
Before I became aware of the fact that the home isn't a charity, or not for profit organisation (NFP), I would regularly drop by with a case of dog food, as a donation, but not any more.
I wish someone could put her out of business, or force a change to being a charity or NFP. Becoming a charity would mean that people would feel easier about helping the place, knowing that they aren't contributing to someone's personal profits
The best idea would be for the police, council, local agencies and dog warden companies to stop using the place as the default place to send strays and abandoned animals and find a charity, or NFP.
This upsets me a bit, because I hate the place and the owner, but a rescue centre is, unfortunately, vital.
Maybe it's time for some proper regulation and control, with legal penalties for those who fail to comply.

Stop bloody dithering!
Why, oh why, oh why do people persist in dithering along at 20%, or more, below the speed limit?
Are the UK's motorists now so paranoid that they daren't even approach the speed limit, for fear of getting a ticket?
Why do they drive at 25mph in 30 zones, when the road is clear, conditions are good and there are no hidden hazards? Why is 40mph de rigeur on single carriageways where the National Speed Limit applies?
No wonder traffic isn't moving - we're all waiting for the paranoid moron, who's holding the rest of us up!
There's a long, downhill, main road near me, which has a 40mph limit and a speed camera. Nobody appears to be capable of exceeding 30 mph and, when they reach the camera, they then slow down to 25mph!!! It's bad enough that they do this in a 30 zone, but in a 40??
FOR GOD'S SAKE, PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN!
OBSERVE THE SIGNS AND CHECK YOUR SPEEDO!
REMEMBER THAT FAILING TO ACHIEVE THE SPEED LIMIT IS A DRIVING TEST FAIL!
IF YOU WANT TO DITHER, GIVE UP YOUR CAR AND LET THE REST OF THE WORLD GET ON WITH THEIR LIFE, YOU DEMENTED, MICRO-MURDERING, TIME-THIEF!
STOP STEALING MY LIFE!!

Oh, come on!
What is it with drivers and snow?
The slightest hint of it and everyone's creeping around at 10mph, or driving up your arse!
Keep your distance and keep the speed up! Learn how to handle your car, find out what it is capable of!
LEARN TO DRIVE PROPERLY!!!

LEARN TO DRIVE PROPERLY!!!
Arrogant lemmings!
Bloody pedestrians!
When was common sense abandoned and the law changed to allow pedestrians to boldly set out across a road, without so much as a pause to check for traffic?
The buggers swagger out, then look directly at you and carry on, expecting you to stop, or they just walk out across the top of a side street and give you abuse if you warn them of impending doom, by using your horn. Worse, though are people with kids in push-chairs... Apart from not looking, they put their spawn at risk, by shoving them out in front.
Last night, one got his comeuppance! Matey strode out on a main road, did the "try to stare em down" trick and failed. I adjusted my line and passed him with about an inch to spare. Matey didn't like me claiming my right of way and threw his can of tramp-fuel at my car. I stopped, got out and assisted matey back to his start point, sitting him in an open topped litter bin, then continued on my way. Oh, how I wanted to drive over him, or give him some percussive road safety education.
I've had enough! It's time the motorists of the UK hit back! Get the message through to these cretins and get the courts to impose penalties which reflect common sense, when these idiots inevitably collide with a car! Why should the driver be penalised for the arrogance and stupidity of pedestrians who haven't got the good sense not to walk out in front of a moving vehicle?
Morons beware! Step out in front of me and I'll drive over you, then sue you for damages!
